Rocky Mountain Outfit — American Mountain Men (AMM) party of Colorado

During the weekend of December 4th & 5th Steve Chin and Bill Gantic camped and scouted up into Kannah Creek at the western slope of the Grand Mesa. Gear was packed in on Steve's horse and mule. This sure made the climb for these two mountaineers much easier. There was very little snow and the day was warming up making for muddy going. Camp was made along the trail just above the creek. Juniper bark was used under the blankets for a comfortable padding that help ward off the cold damp ground and was also laid around the campfire to cut down the mud. Natures carpeting. Steve had a brand new coffee pot that was put to good use. A scout was made of the area for game and future campsites. Deer and rabbit tracks a plenty but no sign of the makers. Bill instructed Steve in a simple method of making a wolf eared cap out of some scrap wool while in the field. In short order Steve had himself a fine cap to keep his head warm at night. Sign talk was practiced as well. The walk back down the next day was warm and a slick muddy mess.
