Rocky Mountain Outfit — American Mountain Men (AMM) party of Colorado

On September 30th - October 2nd 2011, 8 men headed up to a small meadow in the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness on the middle fork of Salt Creek. Salt Creek is what gives the name to Bayou Salado, and we had a great view of South Park from camp. Present were Bradley C Bailey, Zach Carlson, Bill Armstrong, Steve Chin, Cliff Clary, Darko, Tom Karnuta, and Gabe. One of the goals during this camp was that fires had to be started without the use of charcloth. Black powder was used once, then some punky aspen was found and charred. It caught a spark just fine. Brad made a bowdrill set out of aspen and got an ember and made some pitch torches. Some other fire starting methods were discussed. For dinner one night Steve and Brad made boudins, which were stuffed with venison and bacon using a ramrod and a rawhide funnel. Saturday morning the men set out to hunt since it was opening weekend of small game. Darko was the first to come back with a squirrel and word he had seen a rabbit. Cliff, Steve, and Brad went out as well and each brought back a squirrel. Bill Armstrong and Gabe stayed in camp with Zachary and built a cool wikiup and did other camp chores. Sunday morning Zachary went out hunting and shot his first squirrel. We saw beaver, ducks, and were serenaded at night by elk bugling and coyote howling. We had a few small rain showers, but all in all it was a great camp during one of the most beautiful time of year.
